Theatre

Performing Artist

Sarah was always a bit of a character and as a child began dance & performing arts training at a professional theatre school. Her love of dance, music, writing, design, acting and directing soon revealed a preference for finding the humor in oddness, and her forte, comedy, became the influence in her ensemble & solo performance works, leading to improv troupes, one-woman shows, and in teaching others the power of playing dress-up.

“As an artist dealing with an annoying physical disorder, unbounded creative mental enthusiasm is a plus, especially if you’re having chronic conditions or pain- you’ve got to have energy somewhere- even if its clouded with fatigue & brain fog- you simply have to have heart.”

Muses Minnesotan

Muses Minnesotan is a new play in development, inspired by a mysterious 1920s photograph found at a rural Minnesota flea market. “Nine women in flowing Grecian dress creating a beautiful scene outside under the sun in nature, became, in my imagination, nine rural Minnesota sisters, the classical Muses inhabiting Minnesotan gals.”

Set over a summer afternoon in 1921, the sisters are creating photographic tableaus while dreaming of New York City and the Isadora Duncan dance world. “It’s a messy, funny family story about art, longing, women’s liberation, self-discovery, and the distance between the serene picture we make and the wild life happening just outside its frame.”

Barn Conversion Diversion as Installation Piece- Tensegrity Theatre

“Oh, were my body as strong as my aging barn!” Sarah is currently daydreaming & plotting her barn converted into a theatre space. “ I envision an area where all artists- disabled, disenfranchised or desiring of experience & connection- can workshop & eventually produce pieces with help from fellow artist volunteers.”

The focus is on tensegrity and how it is expressed through the theatre- artistically bridging the science of structural tension, the bio-mechanisms of connective tissue and molecules, with functions of a theatre space. The barn was lowered from a three to two story and tension wires installed in the rafters and sides. These were added to compensate for the adjustment, improving strength by providing stabilization yet movement in winds and temperature fluctuation in the wood fibers as they contract and expand in 100+ year old wood .

“I’ve also been studying tension in my fascia, and my own genetically faulty connective tissue tensegrity. It’s been a few years of me learning about connective tissue and I look forward to interpreting those ideas within the barn theatre artistically.”

Also available is the Granary Guesthouse healing spa & creative space for recording music & the perfect place to hum a tune in the sauna.

If you are interested in utilizing the space for your artistic retreat, help around the farm & property are preferred in exchange. To get involved in the transition of the barn, please visit the contact page.
